July 13, 2024. The 2024 season is off to a great start! We are moving into the second phase of our season now and recently started flying in guests after hosting guests who chose to drive in and get picked up in Fair Harbour. Coast wide fishing for Chinook has the been the best in 20 years and Kyuquot is no different. Things here are situation normal, what proved to start as a record year in other areas is what we typically expect here in Kyuquot. And our guests aren’t disappointed! Huge numbers of Chinooks are present and although our off shore waters are just about to open for Springs, there’s no need to go all the way out there, as all of our closer hot spots are consistently providing up to 30+ salmon a day per boat! Coho also started showing up in late June and the numbers continue to increase on the catch board. Fun fact - Coho salmon can put on a pound per week in their final growth spurt before spawning. The abundant Chinook fishing is allowing our guests to be selective on which fish they decided to harvest, plus it leaving lots of time to fish for the bottom dwellers (the best table fare) and they are plentiful as well. Bottom fishing has been extremely good. Limits of halibut, both chickens and turkeys, are commonplace and of course lings and rockfish fill up the boxes. This is in spite of the strong NW winds we’ve been experiencing for the last two weeks, limiting how far we go!
