While the outside, off shore waters (Area 126) remains closed to retention of chinook (until July 15), it hasn’t mattered one bit. Fishing in the near shore waters (Area 26) has been great. Limits of chinook are the norm (as usual) and quick to get, leaving lots of time to fish for halibut, ling cod and rockfish. Coho have even started to show up since the season opened two and a half weeks ago. Chinooks have been plentiful and range from low teens to mid 20’s. Halibut fishing has also been great without having to go way off shore. Trolling up chickens around West Rocks and Double Rocks has been very successful and some of the other areas a little farther out have proven productive for the turkeys in the 35 - 50 lb range. For those that crave fish and chips, the lingcod fishing has been great as well. I can see how I’m going to have to put on the thinking cap to make future fishing reports sound any different. Same old problem as before, but a great problem to have! The consistency of fishing the Kyuquot waters never ceases to amaze me! The weather has been nothing short of unbelievable. Light winds have made for very calm seas. The rains experienced in early June have given way to overcast skies with occasional sprinkles mixed with sunny periods for the past couple of weeks. It’s been perfect fishing weather! We are expecting a quick overnight blow of SE and rain in a few days, but it looks like it will be short lived and we will be back to the great weather the next day. All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. It feels so good to be “back in the saddle” again. The new (to us) facility and location has been a huge hit for our guests so far! Only a few short minutes out to Spring Island and Thornton and you’ll be into fish! Our traditional salmon BBQ has continued to be a stellar success and has proved to be the highlite of the experience for many of our guests so far! Weather permitting, we do it every trip!
